A knight returning to Sweden after the Crusades seeks answers about life, death, and the existence of God as he plays chess against the Grim Reaper during the Black Plague.
Knight Antonius Block (Max von Sydow) returns to Sweden, after having fought in the crusades, only to find misery, plague, fanatical religious practices and Death - with whom he has a long game of chess. If he wins, he lives, if not, he'll allow Death to claim him. During tha game they find themsleves in spirited discussion about the God and the relegion. The Seventh Seal is one of the most influential European art movies and it won a multitude of awards, including the Special Jury Prize at the 1957 Cannes Film Festival.
