A pair of teenagers meet one summer day, start a reckless affair and abandon their families to be with one another.
Monika works in the vegetable market, and Harry lives next door. He takes her to the movies and soon they are to go steady. After spending the night with Monika on his father’s boat, Harry is fired. The two of them takes off, leaving Stockholm, the cars and the city smog behind them. At first, things are idyllic: Sun bathing in the nude, drinking, going to dances. But Monika becomes pregnant. They run out of food and start stealing from summer cottages. Monika is caught and only just escaping, and finally they have to return to town. Harry’s aunt sees to it that they get properly married. They have a daughter but Monika is soon bored with married life and no money and lets Harry take care of the baby. He goes on a business trip, returning a day early to find Monika in bed with another man. They separate. Monika takes off and Harry is left with his little daughter and the memories of one summer of happiness.
