50-year-old Armando picks up Elder off the street, a delinquent youth eking out a living on the fringes of society. What starts as prostitution quickly transforms into a secretive, imbalanced relationship, where both parties struggle to overcome the initial distance between them and the scars left by their pasts. In his debut, director Lorenzo Vigas employs a studied detachment, economical storytelling and the potent backdrop of Caracas’s outskirts. The stormy relationship at its core becomes an unsettling sequence of abrupt fragments, whose very power lies in the film’s consistently detached treatment of its characters. From Afar is a powerful depiction of emotional drought, manipulativeness and how forming an attachment with another person can become the very thing that condemns us to a lonely fate.
