An Ancient Tale: When The Sun Was God

Polish historical action fantasy based on a 1876 novel An Ancient Tale (Stara baśń) by Jozef Ignacy Kraszewski, revives a medieval Polish legend. It takes place in ninth-century Europe, when various Slavic tribes lived in pre-Christian lands that would later become the nation of Poland. The rustic natives have lived peacefully for centuries there , tending their land and worshipping the sun god. But when the power-hungry cruel Prince Popiel and his scheming wife brings the Viking army to establish a barbarous and bloodthirsty regime of terror, it is up to the former commander of Popiel's army, Piastun, and a young hunter and warrior, Ziemowit (Michal Zebrowski), to lead a peasant uprising and put an end to the bloodshed. Ziemowit has spent years living with the Vikings and has only recently returned to his former homeland. Meanwhile he falls in love with Dziwa, lovely daughter of Wisz, a wealthy local merchant, he wishes to marry her, but Dziwa's fate is sealed by her father — she is to become a priestess in the local temple. This piece of legend history is presented here in epic fashion, much like director Jerzy Hoffman's previous project, With Fire And Sword.
